³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ recently hosted a significant engagement on nuclear science and technology following a visit to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) – Internet Reactor Laboratory (IRL), as well as a courtesy call and public lecture by Mr. William Magwood IV, Director General of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA).
The Internet Reactor Laboratory is an initiative of the IAEA that provides an excellent and cost-effective opportunity for students to conduct nuclear reactor physics experiments remotely through the internet. The programme enables students to access a live research reactor and participate in practical learning without the need to travel to the host country.
For Africa, the host reactor is located at the Centre for Nuclear Energy Research (CNESTEN) in Rabat, Morocco. ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ coordinates the Internet Reactor Laboratory for eight local universities in Kenya. The laboratory operates under the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) and supports the Kenya Research Reactor Programme.
The visit highlighted the important role being played by ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ in advancing nuclear education and building national capacity in nuclear science and technology. Through the laboratory, students and lecturers are able to gain practical exposure to reactor operations, neutron behaviour, reactor kinetics and other aspects of nuclear reactor physics in a modern, safe and accessible learning environment.
Courtesy Call to the Vice-Chancellor


Prior to the public lecture, Mr. William Magwood IV paid a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor of ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Justus Wabuyabo, Chief Executive Officer of the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA), and Mr. James Chumba, Director General of the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA).
The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Okumu, was represented by Prof. Caroline Langat Thoruwa, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Outreach).
The discussions focused on the important role of academia in developing the human resource capacity required to sustain Kenya’s nuclear programme, including both nuclear power and non-power applications. The meeting emphasized the need for strong collaboration between universities, government agencies and international partners in order to prepare highly trained professionals who will support the country’s future nuclear ambitions.
Public Lecture Held in Hybrid Mode

The public lecture was conducted in hybrid mode and attracted wide participation from academia, government agencies, students and stakeholders in the nuclear sector. Approximately 188 participants attended in person, while a further 90 participants joined virtually.
During the public lecture, Prof. Caroline Langat Thoruwa was represented by Prof. Willis Ambusso, Registrar (Research, Innovation and Outreach). In addition, Prof. Mathew Piero Ngugi, Executive Dean of the School of Pure and Applied Sciences, was represented by Dr. Raphael Nyenge, Chairman of the Department of Physics.
Among the in-person participants were approximately 70 students and teachers drawn from Alliance Boys High School, Starehe Boys’ Centre, Starehe Girls’ Centre and Nova Pioneer School. The participation of secondary school students demonstrated the growing interest in nuclear science among young learners and reflected the importance of creating awareness of careers in science, technology and innovation at an early stage.
The lecture also attracted undergraduate and postgraduate students from local universities, as well as members of the Kenya Young Generation in Nuclear, who attended in person.
In his address, Mr. Magwood highlighted the importance of investing in education, research and human resource development to support sustainable nuclear programmes. He noted that universities play a central role in preparing the next generation of scientists, engineers, regulators and policy experts who will be required to support both power and non-power applications of nuclear technology.
Panel Discussion on Sustainable Nuclear Programmes
Following the public lecture, participants engaged in a panel discussion focusing on the role of academia, regulators, youth and women’s networks in the development of sustainable nuclear programmes.

The panel discussion underscored the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach in advancing the nuclear sector. Speakers emphasized that universities have a responsibility to produce competent graduates and undertake relevant research, while regulators must ensure that safety, security and public confidence remain at the centre of nuclear development.
The discussion also highlighted the contribution of youth and women’s networks in creating a more inclusive and sustainable nuclear industry. Participants observed that empowering young people and increasing the participation of women in nuclear science and leadership will be essential for the long-term success of Kenya’s nuclear programme.
The event reaffirmed ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ’s position as a key partner in nuclear education, research and capacity building in Kenya and the wider region. Through its coordination of the Internet Reactor Laboratory and collaboration with national and international stakeholders, the University continues to contribute significantly to the development of the expertise needed for a sustainable nuclear future.
