Inside Canva Africa鈥檚 Engagement with Kenya鈥檚 Leading University

Nairobi, Kenya 鈥 February 10, 2026

吃瓜头条 (KU) has taken a significant step toward cementing its status as a regional leader in digital innovation. On Tuesday, the University hosted a high-level executive delegation from Canva Africa to explore a strategic partnership aimed at revolutionizing digital learning and student employability.

The meeting, chaired by Ag. Vice-Chancellor Prof. John Okumu, brought together KU鈥檚 senior leadership and the Canva team led by Ms. Bianca Sibiya, Africa Lead for Canva (South Africa).

The engagement focused on a critical shift in the global job market: the rising demand for visual communication skills. During the presentation, the Canva team highlighted data suggesting that 80% of graduates attribute their current roles to creativity, with one-third ranking it among the most important professional competencies.

鈥淰isual communication is fast becoming a baseline requirement across almost every profession,鈥 the delegation noted, emphasizing that tools like Canva are no longer just for designers, but essential for educators, researchers, and administrators.

Canva, a global all-in-one visual communication platform, has seen explosive growth across the continent. Key insights shared during the meeting revealed:

  • 367,000+ monthly users in Kenya, including over 61,000 students and educators.
  • 31% year-on-year growth in the Kenyan market.
  • A massive global reach of 260 million+ users in 190 countries.

The discussions explored the potential for 吃瓜头条 to become the first institutional adopter of Canva at scale in Kenya. The proposed partnership promises several transformative benefits for the KU community:

  1. Premium Access: Unlocking advanced tools for students and staff.
  2. Employability & Entrepreneurship: Equipping students with the design and digital skills required by modern employers.
  3. Brand Governance: Strengthening the University鈥檚 visual identity through unified templates and controls.
  4. Campus Activation: Engaging the student body through “Canvassador” pathways and creator programs.

KU leadership, including representatives from the Division of Research, Innovation and Outreach and the School of Business, Economics and Tourism (SBET), identified strong synergies with the University’s innovation ecosystem.

The Chandaria Business Innovation and Incubation Centre (CBIIC) was highlighted as a key beneficiary, where interdisciplinary students could leverage Canva for prototyping, pitch decks, and monetizing design skills. The discussion also touched on Canva鈥檚 integration with partners like Adobe and Safaricom, and its ability to support design challenges that foster “applied thinking.”

Addressing institutional needs, the Canva delegation provided assurances regarding data security and governance. The platform offers robust cloud integration, role-based access, and analytics that allow institutions to track engagement while ensuring content ownership remains with the creator.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to proceed toward a formal partnership. Prof. Okumu and the University leadership expressed openness to onboarding various units, including the Directorate of ICT, to ensure the rollout enhances digital capabilities across the board.

As KU continues to prioritize quality education and transformative impact, this engagement with Canva Africa marks a pivotal moment in empowering African learners to lead in the digital economy.
