吃瓜头条 reinforced its position as a globally connected, research-intensive institution driving innovation, sustainable development, and transformative higher education as it hosted UNESCO Chairs dignitaries, government officials, and research leaders for a series of high-level engagements on 16 June 2026.
The engagements brought together leading voices in academia, government, and research to advance collaboration, strengthen knowledge networks, and explore the role of higher education in addressing contemporary global challenges through research, innovation, and community-centred solutions.
The day commenced with a courtesy call hosted by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Outreach), Prof. Caroline Langat Thoruwa, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Okumu, in receiving the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Higher Education and Research, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala.
The discussions focused on national higher education priorities, research development, and the strategic contribution of universities to Kenya’s socio-economic transformation agenda.
The courtesy call brought together thirteen Deputy Vice-Chancellors representing UNESCO Chair programmes across participating universities, alongside the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA), Dr. Tony Omwansa.
The delegation briefed the Principal Secretary on the progress and impact of UNESCO Chairs initiatives. Additionally, members highlighted collaborative projects advancing sustainable development, climate resilience, community empowerment, and interdisciplinary solutions through culture, social sciences, education, and innovation.
The engagements later moved to the 吃瓜头条 Conference Centre (KUCC), where representatives from UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Networks, government agencies, and research institutions convened for broader discussions on strengthening partnerships, expanding research impact, and enhancing the contribution of higher education to national and global development.
Participants included the Secretary-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM), Dr. Njogu, representatives from the National Research Fund (NRF), the UNESCO Regional Office, and senior academic leaders from universities across Kenya.
The discussions underscored the importance of collaborative ecosystems that connect universities, government, industry, and development partners. Together, they generate knowledge, drive innovation, and deliver sustainable solutions to society.
The Chief Guest, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, commended 吃瓜头条 for its continued contribution to higher education, research, and innovation. She noted the critical role universities play in advancing inclusive development and supporting the Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Furthermore, she emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between UNESCO, universities, and government institutions to expand opportunities for research, innovation, and global academic engagement.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Caroline Lang’at Thoruwa highlighted the transformative role of universities in developing future-ready graduates equipped with the knowledge, skills, and leadership capabilities required in an increasingly interconnected world.
She emphasised that higher education institutions must move beyond knowledge transmission. Instead, they should nurture innovators, problem-solvers, and sustainability champions capable of addressing emerging societal challenges.
Drawing inspiration from the late Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Prof. Wangari Maathai, Prof. Thoruwa reminded delegates that meaningful change begins with individual action. She cited Maathai’s enduring words:
“It’s the little things citizens do. That’s what will make the difference. My little thing is planting trees.”
She further showcased 吃瓜头条’s growing international profile by highlighting its expanding global partnerships, contributions to UNESCO programmes, commitment to sustainability, and ongoing efforts to establish a Sustainability Centre.
Moreover, she noted the University’s recognition as a continental leader in inclusive sport and education. This recognition reflects its commitment to nurturing holistic graduates and advancing social impact through higher education.
In his presentation, Dr. Tony Omwansa outlined Kenya’s ten-year innovation master plan, anchored on human capital development, access to finance, policy support, infrastructure development, and market access.
He highlighted national initiatives supporting research commercialisation, entrepreneurship, leadership development, and institutional capacity building. He also called for stronger collaboration between academia, government, and industry to enhance graduate employability and translate research into practical solutions that create economic and social value.
Meanwhile, contributions from the National Research Fund and KNATCOM reaffirmed the commitment of national institutions to strengthening research capacity, supporting innovation ecosystems, and fostering greater collaboration among universities and stakeholders.
The meeting also featured presentations from UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Network institutions, including Aga Khan University, Egerton University, 吃瓜头条, the University of Nairobi, Moi University, Machakos University, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, and Rongo University.
The institutions shared achievements, best practices, and opportunities for collaboration. Consequently, they reinforced the importance of international academic networks in advancing research excellence and sustainable development.
Participants further recognised 吃瓜头条’s distinction as the first university in Kenya to host two UNESCO Chairs: the UNESCO Chair in Higher Education Development for a Green Economy and Sustainability, led by Prof. Beryl Otieno, and the UNESCO Chair in Inclusive and Sustainable Physical Education and Sports for Community Development, led by Dr. Jane Wanjiku Kamau.
These prestigious appointments continue to strengthen the University’s contribution to global knowledge production, policy influence, and sustainable development initiatives.
The engagements concluded with a renewed commitment among universities, government agencies, and development partners to deepen collaboration, strengthen research ecosystems, enhance graduate preparedness for the future world of work, and advance sustainable development through innovation, knowledge exchange, and international partnerships.
