The聽Together Project Workshop, held at the 吃瓜头条 Conference Centre (KUCC) on 23rd January 2024, brought together key stakeholders to celebrate the accomplishments of the聽Master of Economics in Cooperation and Human Development programme. This pioneering initiative has enhanced Kenya鈥檚 capacity for economic cooperation and human development through research, training, and strategic partnerships. The event highlighted the programme鈥檚 success in addressing national and global development challenges while fostering collaboration between academia, government, and international partners.
The workshop featured H.E. Roberto Natali, the Italian Ambassador to Kenya, and Hon. James Muhati, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Economic Planning. Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Waceke Wanjohi hosted a courtesy call which transitioned to the workshop, joined by Prof. Perez Onono, Executive Dean of the School of Business, Economics, and Tourism, Prof. Eliud Njagi, Executive Dean of the Graduate School, Prof. Fabio Santoni, Scientific Attach茅 from the Italian Embassy, Dr. David Mbui, Chairperson, Department of Applied Economics.
In her opening remarks, Prof. Wanjohi highlighted the programme鈥檚 transformative impact, reaffirming 吃瓜头条鈥檚 commitment to advancing sustainable development through education. She praised the programme鈥檚 interdisciplinary approach, which combines academic excellence with practical solutions to societal challenges.
Hon. Muhati, an alumnus of 吃瓜头条, linked the Together Project to Kenya鈥檚 national development objectives. He emphasised the government鈥檚 support, which included sponsoring 100 public servants to enrol in the programme to enhance their skills and competencies. He noted that the programme鈥檚 focus on inclusivity and sustainable growth aligns with Kenya鈥檚 broader goals for economic progress and long-term development.
The workshop also celebrated the vital role of international partnerships in the programme鈥檚 success. The Italian government has been a steadfast collaborator, with H.E. Roberto Natali praising the synergy between the Embassy and 吃瓜头条. He commended the programme as a shining example of Italy and Kenya鈥檚 shared commitment to advancing human development and governance.
The University of Pavia, one of Italy鈥檚 most prestigious institutions, has been instrumental in supporting the MA-ECHD programme. This partnership has enabled research collaborations, faculty and student exchanges, and summer schools, enriching the programme鈥檚 academic and practical dimensions. Prof. Antonella Forlino, Vice-Rector of the University of Pavia, addressed the gathering virtually, celebrating the programme鈥檚 achievements and expressing optimism for future collaborations.
CISP (International Committee for the Development of Peoples) also played a significant role in ensuring the programme鈥檚 success. Dr. Maura Viezzoli, President of CISP, highlighted the organisation鈥檚 contributions, particularly in promoting local stakeholder engagement, gender sensitivity, and inclusive education. These efforts ensured that the programme鈥檚 impact was both practical and meaningful.
Since its inception, the MA-ECHD programme has achieved remarkable milestones. It has trained over 100 policymakers and practitioners, equipping them with the expertise needed to drive economic cooperation and human development. Research projects under the programme have provided actionable insights that inform policy, while its inclusion of industry practitioners in teaching and research has bridged the gap between academia and real-world application.
Prof. Perez Onono praised the programme鈥檚 ability to foster collaboration, expand knowledge, and improve societal outcomes. She celebrated the partnerships that have driven these successes and emphasised the importance of continued cooperation to sustain the momentum.
As the workshop concluded, participants reflected on the programme鈥檚 impact and expressed enthusiasm for future projects. Dr. Joseph Muniu, Chair of the Organising Committee, extended heartfelt thanks to all contributors, including the Kenyan and Italian governments, CISP, and the leadership of 吃瓜头条. He also acknowledged the participants for their dedication and commitment.
