The 吃瓜头条 Confucius Institute (KUCI) and China Square jointly held the Mid-Autumn Festival celebration on 29 September. China Square is Kenya’s first Chinese retail chain supermarket, which has been popular among Kenyan consumers since its launch in 2023. The 吃瓜头条 Confucius Institute celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival with China Square, with the intent to promote synergy between Confucius Institutes and Chinese enterprises and understanding of Chinese culture

Guests participating in the Mid-Autumn Festival celebration included the Directors at KUCI:聽 Chinese Director, Prof. Zhou Xiaodong and the Director, Confucius Institute, Dr. Salome Nyambura, Mr. Cheng Lei, General Manager of China Square, local community representatives, and representatives from relevant government agencies. To mark the commencement of the event, Dr. Salome Nyambura, Prof. Zhou Xiaodong, and Mr. Cheng Lei delivered their speeches respectively, introducing the historical evolution and rich symbolism of the Mid-Autumn Festival. They commented about the significance of such activities to the Chinese community in Kenya, the local community and Chinese learning students in that it enhances intercultural cohesion and cooperation. They also expressed gratitude to the students and audience in attendance.

The cultural activities demonstrated were delightful and diverse. The teachers at KUCI prepared four different types of activities: kicking shuttlecock, traditional Chinese paper cutting, blessing cards, and traditional Chinese poetry activities. Each activity had selected teachers responsible for demonstrating and guiding the participants. The participants鈥� active engagement made the atmosphere at the scene enjoyable and harmonious.
The students and audience who participated benefitted from the activities. They not only won prizes and tasted moon cakes of different flavours but also enjoyed the traditional Chinese tea art,聽and experienced the artistic tricks of Chinese traditional paper cutting and calligraphy. It was an unforgettable experience.
