KU-GIS DAY 2023 on Climate Systems & Cycles

Introduction

翱苍听15th听November 2023, 吃瓜头条 will participate in the international celebration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology; the GISDay-2023. The celebrations bring together academia, industry, government, the private sector, and other players to learn, share and exchange ideas on the real-world application of GIS. This year鈥檚 theme is听Celebrating GIS Professionals听and 吃瓜头条鈥檚 rallying call is听Share Your Passion, Inspire the World. The event is jointly organized by 吃瓜头条 GIS Club (KUGISC), 吃瓜头条 Nature and Environmental Club (KUNEC), 吃瓜头条 Biosystem Club (KUBEC), and Association of Civil Engineering Students (ACES-KU). In recognition of the theme, the clubs have invited the Alumni of KU in the GIS marketplace to come and share their journey and story on how the GIS Foundational knowledge at KU laid a foundation for what they do.

GISDay-2023 will feature talks focusing on Climate Systems and Cycles where speakers from IGAD-Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), the KU GIS Alumni and our partners will explore the central role of GIS in addressing effects of Climate Change.

Concept

The global community in the last two decades has been engaged in a conversation on the critical issues surrounding climate change. The most recent was the Africa Climate Summit 2023 that explored climate change adaptation, resilience and solution strategies for Africa and the World. The dynamics of the climate systems and cycles continue to place uncertainties in communications from management institution.听 Despite decades of studying components and processes of climate systems and cycles, climate modeling and predictive capabilities, climate change adaptation and mitigation, natural disaster preparedness and environmental conservation is illusive. Community engagement and social resilience are pivotal and this year’s GISDay event will revolve around five central aspects, each strategic in exploring different GIS applications. Key focus areas :will be

  • Understanding Climate Systems:听GIS applications decode climate components for informed decisions.
  • Climate Modeling and Predictive Capabilities:听GIS-based simulations plan for a sustainable future.
  • Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation: GIS solutions enhance community resilience and combat environmental challenges.
  • Natural Disaster Preparedness and Environmental Conservation:听GIS aids in vulnerable area analysis, evacuation planning, and biodiversity conservation.
  • Community Engagement and Social Resilience:听GIS identifies marginalized communities, empowering them with tailored adaptation strategies.

The discussions will zoom into exploration of climate modeling and predictive capabilities. Here, GIS technology will take center stage, empowering the audience to witness the transformative power of simulations and models in assessing diverse climate scenarios for planning. We will discuss the community engagement and social vulnerability in the face of climate challenges and enhancing resilience among those most vulnerable.
