KU Explores AI-Driven Learning with Shanghai Edutech

吃瓜头条 (KU) is taking deliberate steps towards future-ready education following high-level discussions with Shanghai Edutech Co. Ltd., a global leader in AI-enabled education technologies.
The engagement saw Prof. Joseph Ngeranwa, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Outreach), host Mr. John Xu, Chief Executive Officer of Shanghai Edutech, for a courtesy call focused on a proposed donation of an AI Smart Board to the University and the exploration of broader institutional collaboration.
The discussions underscored shared ambitions in AI-enabled teaching and learning, digital pedagogy, virtual and open learning systems, and faculty capacity building, aligning strongly with 吃瓜头条鈥檚 digital transformation agenda and academic mission.
The courtesy call was a culmination of earlier engagements between Shanghai Edutech and KU, following a December visit to China by Dr. Mukirae Njihia and Dr. Damaris Kariuki from the Department of Educational Management, Policy and Curriculum Studies, where advanced developments in e-learning, educational technology and AI-driven instruction were explored.
Addressing the meeting, Prof. Ngeranwa emphasised that the global shift towards digital and AI-supported education is no longer optional, noting that future migration in teaching and learning methodologies is inevitable. He highlighted the importance of structured partnerships and stakeholder involvement in rolling out sustainable, secure, and scalable solutions.

Mr. Xu presented Shanghai Edutech鈥檚 comprehensive portfolio, outlining the company鈥檚 AI Smart Boards, intelligent classrooms, AI school platforms, IoT-enabled learning systems, STEAM education solutions, and AI laboratories designed to support project-based and interdisciplinary learning. He noted that the company operates over 20 offices globally, works with 300 distributors, and serves more than 10,000 customers across China, with established AI classrooms in Tanzania implemented in collaboration with the World Bank.
He further explained that Shanghai Edutech鈥檚 solutions prioritise eye protection interactive learning, local data processing for enhanced security, customised cloud systems, and intelligent classroom management, while supporting advanced AI models and neural networks capable of handling sensitive data securely within institutional systems. Members of KU鈥檚 senior management and academic leadership present welcomed the
proposed collaboration, with Prof. Samson Ondigi, Executive Dean of the School of Education and Lifelong Learning, noting that learning paradigms are shifting towards 鈥渓earning by doing鈥, where educators increasingly guide rather than command classrooms.
He observed that the School鈥檚 orientation strongly aligns with AI-supported pedagogy and digital instruction.

Prof. Elizaphan Maina, Executive Dean, Directorate of Virtual and Open Learning (DVOL), described the engagement as timely, citing limitations in conventional online platforms -particularly for practical and demonstration-based courses. He proposed that the AI Smart Classroom could serve as a pilot project, with gradual scaling across the University, especially in specialised and non-traditional programmes, including engineering disciplines.
Contributing to the discussions, representatives from the University鈥檚 ICT Directorate emphasised the importance of a detailed technical proposal to guide implementation, while academic leaders noted that data protection, infrastructure investment, and phased onboarding would be critical to long-term success.
Consensus emerged on the need to establish a joint working group between 吃瓜头条 and Shanghai Edutech to assess technical requirements, funding models, stakeholder involvement, and implementation timelines. The team noted that such a large-scale initiative would benefit from partnerships involving government agencies, development partners, industry stakeholders, and education experts.


The meeting also explored the strategic potential of positioning 吃瓜头条 as a leading AI-driven institution in Kenya, with participants observing that sustained investment in smart learning infrastructure would require a gradual shift from traditional computing models to integrated AI systems.
Concluding the engagement, both parties expressed optimism about the proposed AI Smart Board donation as a catalyst for deeper collaboration, offering KU an opportunity to pilot cutting-edge learning technologies while laying the groundwork for broader institutional transformation.
