KU and IvE Chart the Next Phase of Medical Device Innovation

Across Africa and beyond, the gap between medical needs and accessible technology remains a pressing challenge. ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ (KU) is decisively responding to this call through the Invention Education (IvE) Project, a transformative initiative that is redefining the intersection of engineering, healthcare, and business.

In a recent high-level stakeholders’ meeting chaired by Prof. Paul Okemo, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Finance), the University hosted a delegation from the Lemelson Foundation to strategize on the future of the Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering (Medical Device Innovation).

A Convergence of Disciplines: Breaking Institutional Silos

At the heart of this initiative is a bold departure from traditional academic silos. The project unites the School of Engineering and Architecture and the School of Health Sciences, creating a unified institutional front for innovation.

Dr. (Eng.) June Madete, Chairperson of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Co-Principal Investigator of the IvE Project, emphasized that collaborative teamwork is the only way to transform abstract concepts into viable medical technologies.

From Lab to Market: The Entrepreneurship Pathway

A defining strength of the KU model is its focus on Competency-Based Learning and “lab-to-market” pipelines. Unlike purely theoretical courses, this program—supported by the Global Medical Innovation Programme—nurtures problem-solving skills and entrepreneurial thinking.

  • Dr. Susan Musembi (Director, II&UIL): Highlighted that research outputs are already informing curriculum development to ensure real-world responsiveness.
  • Dr. Peter Kamau (Executive Dean, Engineering): Noted that the strong enrollment in the new cohort signals a generational shift toward innovators ready to prototype and commercialize solutions rooted in African realities.

  • Dr. Gladys Mwangi (Executive Dean, Health Sciences): Called for the inclusion of the School of Business, Economics and Tourism to help innovations navigate regulatory approval and achieve successful market entry.

Global Support and Regional Impact

The project’s sustainability is bolstered by the Lemelson Foundation, the primary funder of the IvE Project. Maggie Flanagan, Senior Programme Officer at the Foundation, reaffirmed their five-year commitment to strengthening KU’s institutional capacity and innovation frameworks.

The program’s visibility is rapidly expanding across the continent. While the first cohort is already underway, recruitment for the second cohort is targeting talent not only in Kenya but also in Nigeria, Malawi, Tanzania, and Uganda.

“Strong institutional structures are essential for nurturing sustainable innovation ecosystems capable of transforming healthcare solutions globally,” noted Maggie Flanagan during the deliberations.

The meeting underscored a shared commitment to national priorities, with Maryanne Muriuki (External Engagement Director, IvE) noting that government ministries and manufacturing companies are actively contributing to the curriculum to ensure industrial scaling.
