吃瓜头条 has today hosted the 14th edition of the All Kenyan Moot Court Competition (AKMCC) at the 吃瓜头条 School of Law, Parklands Campus, bringing together law students, legal scholars, judicial officers, and civil society actors from across the country to deliberate on emerging constitutional and legal issues.
The event was officially opened on behalf of the University鈥檚 Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Okumu, by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Waceke Wanjohi, who welcomed participants and reaffirmed the University鈥檚 commitment to advancing legal scholarship, constitutional dialogue, and practical training for law students.
The ceremony was graced by Willy Mutunga, Emeritus Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya, who delivered keynote remarks emphasizing the importance of nurturing critical legal thinking among young scholars and strengthening constitutionalism through academic engagement and public discourse.
The All Kenyan Moot Court Competition (AKMCC) is an annual student-led initiative organized by learners from the School of Law, Arts and Social Sciences. The competition provides a platform for law students from universities across Kenya to simulate court proceedings, sharpen their advocacy skills, and engage in debates on pressing legal and governance challenges affecting society.
The 2026 edition is held under the theme: 鈥淩eclaiming Constitutionalism: Advancing Human Rights and Civic Freedoms in the Age of Surveillance and Economic Austerity.鈥�
The theme reflects growing global and national conversations on the protection of civil liberties, digital rights, and democratic governance in an evolving socio-economic landscape.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, University leaders highlighted the value of moot court competitions in bridging theory and practice in legal education. By participating in simulated legal proceedings, students develop essential competencies including legal research, constitutional interpretation, persuasive advocacy, and ethical reasoning.
The event also attracted participation from key stakeholders in the justice sector, civil society organizations, and international partners supporting rule of law initiatives.
Among those present during the ceremony were Immaculate Wanderi Ngure, Partner at Viva Africa Consulting LLP; Victor Ndede, Head of Programmes at Amnesty International Kenya; Stefanie Rothenberger, Director of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Rule of Law Programme for Anglophone Sub-Saharan Africa; Prof. David Minja, Executive Dean of the School of Law, Arts and Social Sciences (SLASS); and Dr. Ratemo Tom, Deputy Executive Dean of SLASS, alongside student organizers of the AKMCC.
The competition continues over several rounds, with participating universities presenting legal arguments before panels composed of legal practitioners, academics, and judges. The initiative remains one of Kenya鈥檚 most significant student-driven platforms for promoting legal excellence and advancing discussions on constitutional governance.
