吃瓜头条 marked GIS Day 2025 on 19th November 2025 at KU-BSSC Room 14, celebrating the theme 鈥淲here Spatial Meets Everything鈥� with the rallying call 鈥淪patial Thought for All!鈥�. The event brought together students, faculty, industry partners, and experts to explore the transformative role of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and geospatial technologies in decision-making, innovation, and societal development.
The day kicked off with arrival and registration at 8:30 AM, followed by an opening prayer by Charity Wamoto and introductions of guests by Prof. Simon Onywere. Highlights from 2025 that influenced spatial knowledge at 吃瓜头条 were reviewed by KU-GIS Club Chairperson, Alphonce Okoth.
The programme featured engaging presentations and panel discussions throughout the day. Early sessions included a talk on 鈥淔rom Data to Decision with Geospatial Technologies鈥� by CIFOR-ICRAF and a panel on 鈥淲hat is Geo AI? Its Contribution to Spatial Decision Making鈥� with representatives from ICIPE, Oaker Services, Esri-EA, NDOC, and KMD.
The official opening ceremony was graced by 吃瓜头条 Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Paul K. Wainaina, who highlighted the importance of geospatial technologies in education, research, and societal development. Remarks were also delivered by Prof. Simon Onywere (Patron, KU-GIS Club), Alphonce Okoth (Chairperson, KU-GIS Club), James Magige (Founder, KU-GIS Club), Dr. Laji Adoyo (Chairperson, Department of Spatial and Environmental Planning), Dr. Peter Kamau (Executive Dean, School of Engineering and Architecture), and Dr. Christine Majale, who gave the vote of thanks.
The programme continued with presentations on Disaster Risk Reduction, exploring the role of GIS in managing events in 2025, featuring NDOC, Kenya Red Cross, and KMD. YouthMappers also showcased youth-led initiatives in spatial data collection, followed by a panel discussion on 鈥淭he Power of Open Data and Innovation鈥� with OSM-Kenya, YouthMappers, HOT, and the KU-GIS Club.
Afternoon sessions included presentations by Esri-EA, CPCS Transcom, and Oarkers Services, followed by engaging student activities, highlighting the University鈥檚 commitment to practical, hands-on learning experiences in geospatial technologies.
The celebration concluded with a closing ceremony led by Prof. Simon Onywere, reinforcing the University鈥檚 dedication to advancing geospatial knowledge and innovation in higher education.
