吃瓜头条 marked a significant milestone on 18th March 2026 with the official launch of the UNESCO Chair in Inclusive and Sustainable Physical Education and Sports for Community Development. The initiative reflects the University鈥檚 commitment to leveraging sport and physical activity as tools for promoting social inclusion, sustainability and community transformation.
The launch event, held under the theme: Harnessing the Power of Physical Education, Sports, and Physical Activity for Inclusive and Sustainable Communities, brought together scholars, institutional leaders and development partners. It provided a platform for advancing dialogue on the role of education and sport in addressing societal challenges while fostering inclusive growth.
Presiding over the ceremony, the Ag. Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Okumu, formally commissioned the UNESCO Chair offices at the 吃瓜头条 Directorate Building. This step strengthens institutional capacity and reinforces the University鈥檚 position within the global academic and research landscape.
Prof. Okumu also appointed Dr Jane Kamau as the UNESCO Chair holder for a four-year term. She will lead the implementation of the Chair鈥檚 vision, programmes and partnerships, supported by Dr Julia Githang鈥檃, Chairperson Department of Physical Education, Exercise and Science, Dr Richard Karani and Dr Joy Wachira, faculty members, who formally accepted their appointments.
In her remarks, Dr Kamau expressed appreciation for the confidence placed in her leadership and emphasised the importance of collaboration in achieving the Chair鈥檚 objectives. She noted that success will depend on collective effort, institutional commitment and sustained stakeholder engagement.
The launch received strong endorsement from key stakeholders. The Chief Guest, Dr Lydiah Mucheru, Senior Deputy Director, Directorate of Research, Quality Assurance, Partnerships and Field Services at KICD, representing the CEO, KICD, Dr James Njogu, Sec Gen, KNATCOM, Ms Louise Haxthausen, Director, UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa represented, and Dr Joel Ongoto, commended the University for attaining this recognition. They affirmed that 吃瓜头条 met all the required milestones and standards beyond reasonable doubt. They also congratulated Dr Kamau and pledged their support in advancing the Chair鈥檚 mandate.
The establishment of the UNESCO Chair positions the University as a hub for research, innovation and policy development in physical education and sport. It is expected to drive interdisciplinary research, strengthen capacity building and promote community-centred programmes that address emerging societal needs.
