RATIONALE
Psychoactive substance use is a major global challenge. A considerable proportion of all psychoactive substance users will develop addiction or substance use disorders (SUDs), taking a toll on global health and on social and economic functioning. In Kenya according to NACADA (2012), 5.5% of Kenyan population is dependent on alcohol, while 4.5% is dependent on tobacco 1.5% on miraa and 0.4% on bhang.

SUDs contribute significantly to global illness, disability, and death, with injection drug use (IDU) being a significant means of transmission for serious communicable diseases such as hepatitis and HIV/AIDS. People with SUDs require treatment and rehabilitation and despite efforts to address this problem at a national and international level, there is currently, a shortage of specialized addiction treatment professionals especially in developing countries.

This means that there is a need for specialized addiction treatment training programmes to produce competent addiction professionals, grounded in evidence- based interventional practices to enhance effectiveness of SUD treatment. Further, graduates of a program in addiction treatment science need to have the skills and competencies to generate evidence from practice as well as disseminate the same through peer reviewed international publications.

OBJECTIVES
The overall goal of the programme is to build capacity of substance use disorders (SUD) treatment practitioners to effectively treat clients with SUD using evidence-based practices.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
a. A bachelor’s degree in Counseling Psychology with at least upper or lower second or its equivalent
b. b) Alternative requirements
i) A bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Public health, social work, Theology, Education, or a related field with a lower second or its equivalent, plus work experience in addiction field.
ii) ii) A bachelor’s degree in any field with at least lower second or its equivalent, plus a post graduate qualification (a minimum of a certificate) in Psychiatry, Psychology, Social work, or related field) or work experience in the addiction field.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Addiction Treatment Science is designed to build the capacity of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment practitioners to effectively address treatment of substance use disorders by use of cutting-edge evidence based knowledge and practice.

The postgraduate diploma is a one-year (3 Semester) programme offered on fulltime and part time mode that includes classwork, supervised practicum and a supervise project.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PROPOSED PROGRAMME

A bachelor’s degree in counseling psychology with at least lower second or its equivalent, with internship experience in a drug treatment setting working with clients with SUDS.
A bachelor’s degree in psychology, nursing or social work with at least lower second or its equivalent, plus at least 2 years experience in clinical setting working with clients with SUDs.
A bachelor’s degree in any field with at least lower second or its equivalent, plus a post graduate qualification (at least lower second or its equivalent, plus a post graduate qualification (at least a post graduate diploma) in Psychiatry, counseling or clinical psychology with internship experience in a drug treatment setting working with clients with SUDs.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

All except practicum and project shall be evaluated through Continuous Assessment Tests (sit-in and take away assignments) and end of semester Examinations.
Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs) – 40%
Examination -60%
Total 100%

Practicum shall be evaluated as follows:
On-site supervision – 20%
Weekly case presentation/ Supervision -40%
Practicum Report-40%
Total _=100%

Project will be evaluated through a final Project Report graded out of 100%.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
A student will be eligible for graduation after having covered and passed in all 15 units equivalent to 51 credit hours (pass mark is 40% in all units). In addition, the students should have successfully completed practicum and research project.

The postgraduate diploma in addiction treatment science is a one-year programme comprising of 3 semesters with a total of 51 credit hours/663 contact hours as indicated in the table below
