Introduction

The course envisages developing and broadening understanding of Higher Education, in terms of events that influence developments, contributors to its developments, successes and failures.听 This is an important course for all students and professional teachers, education practitioners, university faculty, management in non-governmental organizational, higher education institutions and community development.听 The course is meant to help the learner appreciate, gain knowledge, understanding of major trends and developments formulate and implement better philosophies of higher education.

Purpose of the course

The course purposes to further enhance the acquisition of knowledge and skills in the field of Higher Education. In addition, the course is meant to promote research competence skills that have been emphasized in the traditional research based only approach.It isalso intended to meet and provide employer/development needs and demands for well-grounded qualified workforce, in-depth study of contemporary issues and challenges in Higher Education. Respond to the changing societal demands in a fast evolving local and global labour market affecting employability of doctoral graduates within and outside academic institutions for lifelong education and training.

Expected Learning Outcomes of the Course

The expected learning outcomes of the course will be to:

  1. Equip students with knowledge, skills and attitudes to understand, analyse and apply research, policy, and practices in the academic field of higher education
  2. Produce independent scholars who have mastery in research in higher education
  • Prepare a new generation of higher education practitioners in higher education for a dynamic labour market and provision of solutions to developmental issues
  1. Imbue a new generation of professionals and practitioners in higher education with transferable (generic) professional skills and competences
  2. Initiate a new generation of professionals and practitioners in higher education with transferable (generic) personal skills and competences

Course Duration

Three to four years for full time and four to six years for part time students.

Admission Requirements

  1. The common University admission requirements for PHD apply.
  2. The common regulations for PHD admission in the School of Education apply
  • The following shall be eligible for a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Higher Education shall apply:
    1. Holders of Masters Degree in Higher Education from a recognized university.
    2. For thesis only option, must have done and passed Research Units at masters level.
    3. Must show ability to undertake academic research by having written a thesis/ dissertation or research project at Masters鈥� level.
