Masters of Science (Environmental Education)

Code and Overview

To graduate in the Masters of Science (Environmental Education) a candidate must either (i) pass in the thesis, and ten (10) units or (ii) pass in the project and all the fourteen (14) units (Table 1). In the second year of study, students will carry out a field research and submit a thesis for examination. Students will be required to attend seminars and present at least two critique papers in areas related to climate change and sustainability.

The student taking Thesis option will be expected to complete a total of ten (10) units to graduate and a thesis. These will comprise:

  • At least eight units, of which will be core and two electives in the first year.
  • In the second year of study, students will carry out field research and submit a thesis for examination.

The student taking Project option will be expected to complete a total of ten (14) units to graduate and a project. These will comprise:

  • At least fourteen (14) units, of which eight (8) will be core and six (6) electives in the first year and second year first semester.
  • In the second year, second semester of study, students will carry out a field research and submit a project for examination.

 

Rationale of the Programme

The programme seeks to adequately prepare teachers, trainers of teachers and curriculum developers who can effectively achieve the goals of environmental education. A graduate of this programme should possess competences in Environmental Education that include; Ecological foundation, Conceptual awareness, Investigation and evaluation and Environmental action skills.听听 The programme graduate should further address fundamental challenges in sustainable utilization of natural resources in Kenya such as rapid population growth, high levels of unemployment and increasing rural to urban migration will further exacerbate these challenges.

 

Objective

The programme of Masters of Science (Environmental Education) seeks to train and produce environmental education practitioners who should be able to;

  • Utilize current theories of knowledge/attitude/behaviour in implementing curriculum materials and strategies to ensure learned knowledge, attitudes and cognitive skills are transferred to life style of the learner
  • Select effective instructional methodologies which are appropriate for desired cognitive and effective behavioural learning outcomes.
  • Analyze environmental issues and associated value perspective for unique environmental issues with respect to their cultural and ecological implications. issues.

By the end of the programme it is expected that the graduate will be able to;

PLO i. a. Show knowledge of evolution of environmental consciousness and Environmental education as part of solutions to environmental issues be applying the goals, objectives, and principles of environmental education

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of environmental education as a response to the environmental crisis at national regional and global levels and use a selection of principles of environmental education in educating for and about the environment

PLO. ii. Offer critical understanding human-cultural activities that influence the environment from an ecological perspective

PLO. iii. a.听 Communicate environmental information in a variety of formats that call for application of principles of environmental education to bring about environmental literacy

PLO.听 iii. b.to analyze environmental issues and associated value perspectives with respect to their economic, cultural, and ecological implications

PLO. iv. Carry out research on environmental area of concern and apply statistical techniques to disseminate generated knowledge

Mode of Delivery of the Programme

The course is offered through blended learning.

 

Admission Requirements

Applicants for the Masters of Science (Environmental Education) must hold a Bachelor鈥檚 degree with First-Class Honors, or Second-Class Honors (Upper Division) degrees or their equivalent in Environmental Education, Environmental Studies. For holders of Second Class (Lower Division) degree in the above-mentioned areas, they will be expected to have evidence of at least two years of relevant work experience.

Full Time; Fees ksh.295,800; Non East Africans ksh.369,750 p.a
