Master of Science (Sustainable Urban Development)

Code and Overview

To graduate in the Master Science (Sustainable Urban Development) a candidate must pass in the project and 10 core units and 4 elective units. In the second semester of the second year they will be expected to carry out a field or laboratory research in the final semester and submit a project report for examination. Students will be required to attend seminars and present at least two critique papers in areas related to climate change and sustainability. The courses/units offered are presented in Table 1.

Rationale of the Programme

According to United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, urban population is expected to rise from 3.6 billion in 2011 to 6.6. billion in 2050. Urban areas are expected to absorb most of the rural population growth expected in the next four decades. Population growth is increasingly becoming mainly an urban phenomenon largely in developing countries. Rapid urbanization in Africa is accompanied by socio-economic and environmental problems. These include; poverty, inadequate economic empowerment, poor governance, poor waste management, climate change impacts, water and sanitation management, health, food insecurity, unsustainable energy alternatives among other pressing issues. With such a scenario, it calls for training of experts who have skills and professionalism to carry out research and prescribe solutions to urban challenges in Africa.

Objective

The programme of Master Science (Sustainable Urban Development) seeks to train innovation and action-oriented professionals ready to make a contribution towards sustainable livelihoods of urban communities. By the end of the programme it is expected that the graduate will be able to;

  1. Demonstrate possession of knowledge, skills, competencies and develop values necessary for innovative development for sustainable urban development
  2. Explain the holistic and trans-disciplinary perspectives of sustainable development
  3. Apply skills for technology-oriented research with direct bearing on enhanced social-economic development
  4. Demonstrate understanding of innovative entrepreneurial culture and practices for wealth creation and poverty alleviation.
  5. Be capable of engaging local and national governments on appropriate policies that support sustainability thinking for development.
  6. Demonstrate ability to carry out research on urban issues and report the findings accordingly

The course is offered through blended learning.

Admission Requirements for the Programme

Applicants for the Master Science (Sustainable Urban Development) must hold a Bachelor鈥檚 degree with An Upper Second-Class degree in any of the following areas of specialization: Environmental Studies, Geography, Natural Resources Management, Agricultural Sciences, Biological and Physical Sciences, Urban & Regional Planning, Engineering, Public Health, Architecture, Land Economics, Design, Development Studies and any other relevant degree from a recognized University. A Lower Second Class degree in the disciplines mentioned above and with at least two years of relevant experience after the award of the first degree.

Majority of our graduates are certified and licensed EIA Lead Experts with the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), and many others have made successful careers as local and global consultants in sustainable urban development and other related disciplines
