Master of Science (Fisheries Science)

Overview of the programme
A Master of Science (MSc) degree in Fisheries Management is a graduate programme that takes two years to complete with course work during the first year and Thesis Research during the second year. Some of Topics covered in this program include, Advanced Ichthyology, Fish parasites and Diseases, Fisheries Technology and Marketing, Reservoir management, Principles of aquaculture, Ecology and management of Inland Fisheries. Students carry out a supervised research project for their thesis work.

Rationale of the programme
The MSc (Fisheries Science) programme at ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ will equip graduates with skills to assess the fisheries resources, their exploitation and the conservation of the environment and biodiversity. The graduates will also be equipped with the relevant skills and knowledge to manage and exploit fisheries resources on a sustainable basis and apply ecological principles in managing degraded fish habitats. The graduates will have the capacity to contribute in the achievement the Blue Economy objectives and the Development Goals and the economic and social pillars of the Kenya vision 2030. The review of M. Sc. (Fisheries Science) programme was carried out in consultation with stakeholders to ensure that the graduates are equipped with skills relevant to the current and foreseeable job market. Stakeholders were drawn from institutions of higher learning, research organization, governmental departments, community based organization. The M. Sc (Fisheries Science) programme at ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ will equip graduates with skills to investigate the impact of humans on the environment, biodiversity and the sustainable utilization of fisheries resources. The graduates will also be equipped with the relevant skills and knowledge to be able to apply ecological principles in solving many problems related to environmental degradation. Further, the graduates will to contribute in the achievement Development Goals and the economic and social pillars of the Kenya vision 2030.

Objectives of the programme
The programme aims at producing graduates with high potential to contribute in finding solutions to problems facing humans in the areas of global climate change, environmental pollution, land use changes, wildlife management, habitat degradation, restoration ecology, pest management and conservation.

Mode of delivery of the programme
The programme is delivered through both face-to-face as a regular programme through a variety of approaches including lectures, tutorials, discussions, assignments, student presentations, laboratory and field-based practical lessons. A Thesis Research Project is completed after the course work.

Admission requirements for the programme
The common regulations for all Masters’ degrees in the University shall apply. The general regulations for master’s degrees in the School of Pure and Applied Sciences shall apply. The following shall be eligible for registration in the Master of Science (Fisheries Science):

  • A holder of a Bachelor of Science degree with at least an upper second class Honour’s with Zoology as a single subject or as one of the two science subjects;
  • A holder of a Bachelor of Education degree who has studied Zoology courses to degree level and has attained at least an upper second class Honour’s degree;
  • A holder of a Bachelor’s degree in any other relevant areas of study such as Biology, microbiology, molecular biology, medical laboratory science; Biochemistry, Medicine among other biological degree courses with at least an upper second Honour’s degree (or pass where applicable) and has taken units related to Immunology.
  • A holder of Bachelor’s degree with a lower second class may be considered with grade C in the area of specialization.
