Overview of the programme
A Master of Science (MSc) degree in Coastal and Marine resources Management is a graduate programme that takes two years to complete with course work during the first year and Thesis Research during the second year. Students cover several topics during their course work including Advanced Oceanography, Advanced Marine Ecology, Legal Framework in Marine and Coastal Resources Management, Climate Change and Marine Environments, Marine Biology, Fisheries exploitation and Management, Coastal Forest Resources and Wetland Resources and Marine Pollution and Management among other topics. Students carry out a supervised research project for their thesis work.
Rationale of the programme
Increased human population, has resulted in the coastal and marine resources being exploited in a manner that is not sustainable. Therefore, today there is a need to train individuals who can provide solutions to these ecological aspects of the diverse and valuable resources of the coast and the ocean, prevalent issues and challenges in sustainable management of coastal and marine resources as well as strategies of conservation and management of coastal and marine resources. Needs assessment was carried out as part of stakeholder surveys involving employers and consumers of the programme. The review of M.Sc. (Coastal and Marine Resource Management) programme was carried out in consultation with stakeholders to ensure that the graduates are equipped with skills relevant to the current and foreseeable job market. Stakeholders were drawn from institutions of higher learning, research organization, governmental departments, and former students. The MSc (Coastal and Marine Resource Management) programme at 吃瓜头条 will equip graduates with scientific knowledge and professional level skills that are needed in natural resource management. Further, the graduates will have the potential to contribute in the achievement Sustainable Development Goals and the economic and social pillars of the Kenya vision 2030.
Objectives of the programme
The goal of MSc (Coastal Marine Resources Management) degree course is to provide students with advanced theoretical knowledge and practical skills in identifying, measuring and quantifying marine and coastal resources and the effects of anthropogenic impacts upon them. Students will be trained in marine field research techniques, advanced analytical methods, and develop science communication skills as well as acquire skills that will empower them to make decisions and develop policy on the management and protection of marine environments across the globe.
Mode of delivery of the programme
The programme is delivered through both face-to-face as a regular programme and in a blended method as a Continuing Education Programme (CEP) A variety of approaches including lectures, tutorials, discussions, assignments, student presentations, laboratory and field-based practical lessons, and Thesis Research Project taken after the course work.
