Master of Science (Applied Analytical Chemistry)

Introduction
Analytical Chemistry is the application of chemical knowledge and principles in industrial and research environment in support of decision making and quality assurance. This MSc program aims to provide comprehensive training in state-of-the-art methods and skills to tackle the challenges of a broad range of applications. Students should expect one year of course work involving advanced chemistry courses relevant to analytical chemistry. They should also expect to attend seminars on different subjects that help in the development of communication and transferable skills. The second year of the program provides students with the opportunity to undertake research in chemical application areas that not only address issues in society but also give the student experience in research.

Rationale of the Programme 
The rapid changes in science and technology, materials and products in the chemical industry demand continuous improvement in chemical education and training. The MSc (Applied Analytical Chemistry) programme provides advanced training in cutting edge chemical research and analytical tools, knowledge and skills. It is relevant for BSc chemistry graduates who desire to participate in research in chemistry and the environment.

Objectives
1).    To provide training in cutting-edge analytical chemistry tools
2).    To develop communication, study, transferable, and research skills
3).    To develop critical thinking, scientific inquiry through the design of research projects that address real-life challenges
4).    To provide training in the science (physics and chemistry) behind state-of-the-art measurement technologies, their methods and application limitations.

Admission Requirements
i).    Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Education (Science) Degree with at least Second Class Honors (Upper Division) or equivalent from a recognized university with Chemistry as a major or regular subject and with an average grade of at least ‘C’ in Chemistry units.
ii).    Applicants with a second class (lower division) degree must have at least two years of relevant work experience to qualify for admission.

Programme Structure
The Master of Science (Applied Analytical Chemistry) shall be by course work, examination and thesis, broken down as follows:
a)    The first year, a student takes eleven (11) units, five in each semester and in
b)    The second year, a student develops a research proposal and conducts research work on a specific area and submits a thesis for examination.
The student shall choose an area of specialization from among those provided. Possible research areas include inorganic adsorption studies, water quality, nanomaterials, modeling studies, food chemistry, environmental analysis, etc.

Programme Duration 
The course extends over a period of at least eighteen (18) months.

Career opportunities
Most of our MSc (Applied Analytical Chemistry) graduates remain in chemistry. Some go into the educational sector, and some go into industry (particularly the health-related industries such as pharmaceuticals). Other destinations, include research institutions, higher education, government and the civil service and financial services.
