| Programme Title: | Master of Library and Information Science |
| Introduction | The programme is designed to equip students with appropriate domain knowledge in information science and to develop skills in information organization, retrieval, and dissemination using modern Information Communication Technology. Students who complete this programme should be able to organize information sources, retrieve information from the various sources using existing retrieval tools, offer information services to users with varying information needs, and evaluate the various information sources. They should also be able to develop and manage information service departments and offer consultancy services locally and internationally. |
| Programme objectives | To train professionals who are able:
·        To critically analyze information services, identify potential areas of research, initiate research process, conduct and disseminate research findings. ·        To apply ICT technologies in the management of information resources and services ·        To analyze user information needs for collection development ·        To develop and implement information literacy programmes in institutions. ·        To plan and manage library information systems. |
| Justification / Rationale | This is a market driven programme aimed at addressing the growing demand for information science professionals with requisite competencies and skills. As society increasingly becomes information-based, there is need for professionals with competencies in information organization, retrieval, and evaluation. Such professionals should be able to synthesize existing information on the behalf of users for strategic decision making and leadership. This program therefore aims at training managers to work in libraries, other information centers and consultancies. |
| Entry Requirements | Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science or any other information related degree course from a recognized institution and attained Second Class Honours (Upper Division).
                                            OR Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science or any other information related degree course from a recognized institution and attained Second Class (Lower Division) with 1 (one) year relevant work experience. |
