Master Arts (Sociology)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The common regulations for all Master’s Degrees in the University shall apply.Ìý The common regulation for all Master’s Degree in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences shall apply.Ìý The following shall be eligible for registration for the M.A. in Sociology.

  • A holder of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology of at least an Upper Second Class Honours in Sociology of ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ, or the equivalent from any other recognized University.
  • A holder of a Lower Second Class Degree in Sociology may be eligible, provided that the candidate can produce evidence of proven research ability.

COURSES DESCRIPTIONS
ASC 800: ADVANCED SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY
Critical analysis of classical sociological theory. Theories of development and underdevelopment of the Third World.Ìý Application of theories to research processes and methodologies. Selective integration of social science theories to sociological practice.
ASC 801: PHILOSOPHY OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES
Examination of the philosophical assumptions underlying sociology.Ìý Alternative approached, methods, concepts, including problems, explanation and justification, objectivity and social science.
ASC 803: GENDER AND FAMILY IN AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT
Sociological theories explaining gender differences; sexual differentiation and sexuality.Ìý Comparative study of global gender issues such as production; property relations; class; social values, technology and development.
AMC 800: RESEARCH METHODS IN SOCIAL SCIENCES
Introduction, the nature and functions of research. Proposal development. Definition and formulation of hypotheses. Formulation of research designs. Sampling procedures. Data collection tools and sources. The use of pilot projects. Research budgets and application for funds. Data analysis, interpretation and presentation.Ìý Introduction and the use of computers in data analysis and management. Writing research reports. Research dissemination strategies.
ASC 804: ADVANCED DEMOGRAPHY
Population theories; biological, cultural economic and social; demographic transition theory; methods and sources of demographic projections. Politics of population policies, population control programmes and human rights, population parameters, density, age and sex structure, migration and settlement patterns.
ASC 806: ADVANCED INDUSTRIAL SOCIOLOGY
Management and organization, leadership, functions of the executives; human relations in industrial work environment; job satisfaction and work performance; ethics; motivations; problems of personnel and authority in a transitional society.
ASC 807: ADVANCED MEDICAL SOCIOLOGY
Theoretical approaches to sociology of medicine, impact of modern medicine on developing societies; epidemiology of diseases and social implications.
Current community health and problems and programme; AIDS and other epidemic diseases; maternal child health; safe motherhood; paramedic- patient relationships.
ASC 808: ADVANCED URBAN SOCIOLOGY
Socio-cultural, economic and political functions and dysfunctions of urbanism; the socio-cultural context of urbanism as way of life; socio-psychological impact of social change on city dwellers.Ìý Rural migrants and urban life.Ìý Future of urbanization focused on developing countries.
ASC 803: ADVANCED RURAL SOCIOLOGY
Various types of rural communities. Rural structures in Africa. Rural residential patterns. History of agrarian societies; social organization; land tenure systems. Rural economy: peasant and pastoral societies. The nature of rural development; Rural-urban linkages. The effects of modernization and globalization. Rural development strategies and policies
