Doctor of Philosophy(Chemistry)

Introduction
The pursuit of PhD in chemistry provides an opportunity to apply and master chemical principles and prepares individuals for positions in research, industry, and academic institutions. The program at KU focuses on advanced knowledge, independent research, and the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Objectives of the course
1. 聽 聽To develop relevant transferable skills through a number of compulsory courses during the first year of their studies
2. 聽 聽To hone research skills for problem solving and generation of new chemical knowledge.
3. 聽 聽 To hone proposal development, data analysis and presentation skills

Rationale for the programme
According to the Vision 2030 document, Kenya鈥檚 overall Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) capacity and capability is currently weak in comparison with other developing countries. Furthermore, with the expansion of university education in the country, the need for PhD holders, professors and researchers is a pressing one. This programme seeks to fill the gap by training individuals to fill the available positions and training others. Therefore, for Kenya to realize the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, and vision 2030, it requires to enhance training of highly skilled human resource that are able to apply science, technology and innovation for socio-economic development.

Entry Requirements
i). 聽 聽A Master of Science (chemistry) degree of 吃瓜头条
ii). 聽 聽A Master of Science (chemistry) degree or equivalent qualifications from a University recognized by the Senate of 吃瓜头条.
iii). 聽 聽A Bachelor of Science degree of 吃瓜头条 in a relevant field of study with at least three years postgraduate research experience in the subject area, and proven evidence of research ability in the form of papers, reports, manuscripts, portfolios or other published works.
iv). 聽 聽A Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent qualification from a University or institution recognized by the Senate of 吃瓜头条 with at least three years of postgraduate research experience in the subject area and proven evidence of research ability in the form of papers, reports, manuscripts, portfolios or other published works.

All PhD students are probationary in the first year and progression to the second year (and registration for the PhD) depends on successful development of a research proposal in the first year.

Mode of delivery
i). 聽 聽Blended modes of face-to-face and e-learning seminar presentations
ii). 聽 聽Research and Thesis
The project area and Supervisor are determined either during the application process or during proposal development process.

Course Duration
i). 聽 聽The doctorate degree shall extend over a period of at least three (3) years from the date of registration for a candidate studying full-time.
ii). 聽 聽Part-time candidates shall be registered for a minimum of four (4) years, except that under special cases the Graduate School may recommend to Senate that the candidate may submit the thesis after three (3) years.
iii). 聽 聽No candidate for PhD degree shall be registered as a full-time student for more than four years or a part-time student for more than six (6) years.
iv). 聽 聽The maximum period of study may be extended for no longer than three years and six years for full-time and part-time PhD candidates, respectively, unless under special circumstances.

Career opportunities
Most of our PhD graduates remain in chemistry. Some go into the higher educational sector, and some go into industry (particularly the health-related industries such as pharmaceuticals). Other destinations, include research institutions, higher education, government and the civil service
