Introduction

Doctor of philosophy (Medical Microbiology) is a postgraduate programme that builds on the foundation of Masters in Medical microbiology and other related biology Sciences. It focuses on advanced knowledge, independent research, and the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It endeavors to deepen the skills and knowledge of all microorganisms that are significant in medical health and their economic importance.

Rationale

The programme is designed to cover advanced range of Medical Microbiology to develop human resource capacity that is well trained to carry out research for generation of knowledge and their application in solving microbial health challenges including antimicrobial resistance, epidemiology innovation of new diagnostics for various pathogenic microbes.

Objectives

By the end of the programme, the graduate shall be able to effectively;

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge in analyzing and optimizing microbial processes for medical applications.
  • Apply specialized techniques in Medical microbiology for developing microbial-based products that aids in disease diagnostics, effective treatment of microbial infections overcoming the challenges of resistances.
  • Advocate for biotechnological engineering of microbes for development of microbial based therapeutics.

Entry requirements

A student wishing to pursue a PhD degree in Medical Microbiology must satisfy the minimum ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ and School of Pure and Applied Sciences entry requirements.

Must be a holder of Masters of science in Medical Microbiology or related MSc  by course work and thesis.

International Students

All international students will apply to the Commission for University Education (CUE) for assessment of their graduate qualifications for recognition and equation of foreign qualifications before enrolling for postgraduate studies.

Mode of Delivery and programme structure

The programme is offered by research and thesis.  The programme shall extend over a period of at least three (3) years from the date of registration for a candidate studying full-time but not extending beyond four years from the date of registration.
