DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT

INTRODUCTION TO THE PROGRAMME
The Doctor of Philosophy in Tourism Management Programme aims to develop tourism scholars’ and professionals who will be able to promote the ideology of tourism development that entails sensitivity and responsiveness to societal needs and the right of every person to knowledge in the society through knowledge creation based on high academic standards.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of the Ph.D. (Tourism Management) the graduate will be able to:-
i) Demonstrate knowledge and apply skills that will lead to tourism product development, destination
marketing and management on sustainable basis;
ii) Critique and contribute to the development tourism policies; trends, theories, principles, practices,
methodologies and knowledge interpretation to address fundamental questions and (or) problems in
tourism management;
iii) Design and conduct research that is significant towards addressing academic, scientific, practice and
policy gaps within tourism in Kenya, Africa and beyond;
iv) Apply oral, written and communication skills, effectively to scholarly and practitioner audiences
through publishing and presenting their academic work and prepare grant proposals; and
v) Execute tourism management knowledge and apply skills essential for careers in universities, research
institutions and development agencies.

RATIONALE OF THE PROGRAMME
The growth of the tourism industry has been phenomenal, as a major sector in the global economy. Tourism has been increasing steadily, with Africa experiencing one of the highest growth rates. Owing, to its economic potential, more and more countries, both in developed and developing worlds are turning to tourism to address their respective developmental goals. The impacts from tourism growth have also been diverse and varied to destinations, with Kenya being one of the most successful countries in Africa in Tourism development. However, the country continues to face critical challenges in tourism planning, development, marketing and practice. There is therefore a critical need to inform and develop high powered manpower and research content relevant to addressing developmental objectives and tourism management challenges. This PhD programme seeks to meet these broad aims while addressing other global issues related to tourism. This is in line with the aspirations contained in the National Tourism Blueprint (2017), developed by the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife as well as Vision 2030.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PROGRAMME
In order to qualify for admission for the Doctor of Philosophy at Թͷ, the candidates must
have the following academic and professional requirements:-
 Holder of a Master’s degree in Tourism Management of Թͷ, or a holder of any of the
following relevant fields: Master’s degree in Hospitality Management; Business Management;
Economics; and Geography of allied disciplines, or;
 Holder of a relevant Master’s degree of any other University recognized by Թͷ
Senate as equivalent to status of the qualifications in (i) above, or;.
 Holder of other qualifications considered by Թͷ Senate as equivalent to a relevant
Master’s degree in the disciplines outlined in (i) above

 A Candidate who does not have a Bachelor’s Degree but holds a Master’s Degree will have to undertake
a Pre-Doctoral course in Tourism constituting of the following units
 Sustainable Tourism Planning and Policy
 Destination Management and Marketing
 Tourism Governance and Regional Development
 Managing Tourism Distribution and Intermediaries
 Research Methods
 Statistics

MODE AND STRUCTURE OF DELIVERY OF THE PROGRAMME
The programme will be offered by face to face, blended and online modes of delivery.

PROGRAMME DURATION
The Doctor of Philosophy in Tourism Management programme shall extend over a period of three academic years; two semesters per year adding up to 6 Semesters/trimesters. The PhD courses are designed based on various core [7 Units] and specialization courses [2 Units] and Thesis as outlined below.

CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS
1. To graduate with a PhD in Tourism Management, a candidate will be required to pursue the PhD programme in Hospitality Management by “Coursework, Examination and Thesis”.
2. A candidate shall complete ten (10) units [Core and Elective] offered in the program including a thesis and attain the pass mark of 50% and above in all the course work units. The candidate will also be required to successfully complete a thesis and publish at least one (2) manuscript in a referred journal.
3. The following requirements are important for the PhD. candidates to note:
4. A PhD candidate who shall have successfully completed and passed the required coursework and examinations, shall be eligible to start the process of proposal development towards PhD research;
5. No candidate admitted for a PhD Degree shall be registered as a full-time candidate for more than four (4) years or part time for more than six (6) years.

6. A candidate shall regularly consult with their supervisors at least once per month, and fill-in a supervision tracking tool after each supervision meeting. A copy of the Supervision

Tracking Tool will be submitted to the Graduate School at the end of every semester through their supervisors.

Full Time; Fees ksh.275,400= Non East Africans ksh.344,250 p.a
