INTRODUCTION
The tourism industry is one of the most dynamic and significant sectors of the global economy. The changing
global tourism environment and industry’s evolving skills sets calls for a knowledgeable and qualified workforce
for the tourism industry.
This diploma in tourism management curriculum provides a comprehensive overview of the educational
programmes designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies required to
meet the specific needs of the industry.
This programme is designed to address the multifaceted nature of tourism, it includes courses such as hospitality
and tourism marketing, hospitality and tourism accounting, travel agency techniques, tour operations and
packaging, fundamentals of air ticketing, research methods and statistics in hospitality and tourism among
others.
Therefore the tourism department of ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ is committed to cultivate a generation of tourism
professionals who are equipped with relevant skills and competencies to positively contribute to the industry.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES
The programme is intended to develop students with in-depth knowledge and expertise on customer service,
tour packaging and wildlife conservation knowledge that are essential in addressing the current and future
the tourism industry needs.

RATIONALE
Tourism is highly labour-intensive; the quality and quantity of human capital is critical to its success.
Understanding human resource development at a macro level is particularly important in tourism. This focus
raises several key issues: encouraging employers to take an interest in training and education; improving
the supply and, quality of and access to training; and enhancing the status of careers in tourism.
Training is essential for human resource development, as well as in the promotion and development of the
tourism industry. This programme is, therefore, designed to address the knowledge and skills gaps among the
technical and lower cadre staff in the tourism industry. The trained professionals and leaders will also provide
a valuable impact on the tourism sector within the East African region and beyond.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
a) In order to qualify for admission for the Diploma in Tourism Management at ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ, the
candidate must:-

  • Satisfy the minimum entry requirements of ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ for Diploma courses.
  • Have a minimum of grade of C in KCSE examinations.
  • Have done any two (2) of the following subjects at KCSE and passed with a minimum grade of C –
    (minus) in each: Biology/Biological Sciences; Geography/ History; Business Education/Computer
    Applications: English/Foreign Language
  • Mean grade C-(minus) at KCSE with a Certificate in a field related to tourism from a recognized
    Institution and two (2) years of relevant experience.

b) This will be no credit waivers for this programme.

MODE AND STRUCTURE OF DELIVERY
The programme will be offered by; Full-time and Digital/E-learning modes of study.

PROGRAMME DURATION
The duration of the Diploma in Tourism Management programme shall be at least 2 years. In order to graduate
with a Diploma in Tourism Management, the candidate must have successfully completed and passed all units.

activities for tourists. Because tourism is complex and diverse, each sector has many job opportunities and
career paths to offer. Students undertaking a diploma in tourism management could work in the following
areas.
Airlines. The airlines are a major travel industry employer, offering jobs at many levels, ranging from entry
level to top management. Jobs in this area include flight attendants, reservation agents, ticket agents, baggage
handlers, sales representatives, sales jobs, clerical positions, and research jobs.
Cruise Companies. The cruise industry is the fastest-growing segment of the tourism industry today. Job
opportunities include those for clerical workers, sales representatives, market researchers, recreation directors,
and CEOs.
Hotels, Motels, and Resorts. The range of jobs in this category are extremely broad. They include general
manager, accountants, room clerks, reservation clerks, front-office managers, housekeepers, waiters,
bartenders, and laundry workers.
Travel Agencies and tour companies offer employment opportunities in such positions as tour managers,
travel agents, tour coordinators, accountants, tour planners, reservations specialists, sales representatives,
costing specialists, office supervisors, and managerial positions.
Meeting Planners is a growing profession is meeting planning. Many corporations and associations are hiring
people whose job responsibilities are to plan, arrange, and conduct meetings.
