INTRODUCTION
The hospitality industry is one of the largest foreign exchange earners in Kenya. Currently, the industry is
facing challenges in meeting the diverse needs of the clientele. Professionals and the workforce in general,
operating in the industry, should be competent to address these challenges. This can be achieved through
appropriate training. Therefore, the Department aims to train middle-level personnel in Hospitality Management
to respond to the needs of the industry. The mission of the programme is to provide high-quality professional
instruction, research and community service in the hospitality industry. This will enable students to provide
services in the formal and non-formal sectors.
OBJECTIVES
i. Equip students with knowledge and skills to enable them work in Hospitality industry.
ii. Offer training that serves as a foundation for further education in this discipline.
iii. To inculcate the value of community service and social responsibility to the students.
RATIONALE
The Department of Hospitality Management focuses on providing specialized skills in food and beverage
production, food and beverage service, accommodation operations, front office operations and Laundry
procedures. The programme addresses the skill needs of students interested in careers in hospitality industry
locally, regionally and globally.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
5.1 Candidates must satisfy the minimum entry requirements of ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ for Diploma courses.
5.2 Candidates must have obtained a mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or equivalent. Candidates must have
obtained grade C-(minus) in two (2) subjects chosen from the following categories:-
Alternative A
Biology
Chemistry
English/Kiswahili
or
Alternative B
Home Science
Biological Sciences/Physical Sciences/Mathematics
English/Kiswahili
Or
Mean grade C-(minus) at KCSE) with a Certificate in a field related to hospitality from a recognized Institution
and two (2) years of relevant experience.
MODE AND STRUCTURE OF DELIVERY
The Diploma in Hospitality Management is offered on fulltime mode in the Main Campus – Nairobi, in
September of every Academic Year.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE- DIPLOMA IN HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT
PROGRAMME DURATION
The Diploma in Hospitality Management is for full time students and shall be offered in five (5) semesters.
A student will take at least six (6) units per semester.
The Diploma will take a maximum of two (2) years
CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS
The course focuses on providing specialized skills in food and beverage production, food and beverage
service, accommodation operations, front office operations and Laundry procedures among others.
Industrial attachment of a minimum of six (6) months shall be undertaken upon successful completion of
the course work before a student can graduate.
After the completion of the diploma course, a student can progress to do the Bachelors’ degree in
Hospitality and Tourism Management.
The students are given credit wavers which enable them to complete the degree programme in a shorter
time
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Our graduates can work in hospitality and tourism industry institutions like hotels, restaurants, resorts,
hospitals among others
The graduates can work as chefs, restaurant managers, housekeepers, front office personnel both locally
and internationally
