Overview of the programme
A Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) in Coastal and Marine Resources Management is a degree program that teaches learners on strategies for managing coastal and marine resources. Broad topics included in the course are Coastal and Marine resources, Management strategies and Research Skills. For a student to graduate he/she must complete and pass 63 units each 39 contact hours totaling 2457 hours with a pass mark of at least 40% in each unit. A student will not be allowed to graduate with a failed core unit without doing a retake and passing. The award of the degree shall be subject to the students satisfying all the relevant University regulations including class attendance and full payment of fees.
Rationale of the programme The need for the programme was verified by consulting the programme consumers since the programme was first launched and the preparedness of the university to offer the programme. All the respondents were unanimous that the programme is important. At its full cycle the continued need for graduates with integrated knowledge and skills in the management of Coastal and Marine Resources was expressed by the stakeholdersThe survey targeted alumni, current students and prospective employers of graduates from the programme. The views of the participants included incorporation of skills and competencies required to produce competent graduates. The B.Sc. (Coastal and Marine Resources Management) course is an applied science that seeks to produce graduates capable of research and management of the diverse coastal and marine resource.. It was designed enable the graduates have the required skills and knowedge to deal with the myriad of problems facing the world today including social conflicts, poverty, underdevelopment, hunger, diseases, pollution and ecosystem stability in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and the economic and social pillars of the Kenya vision 2030 and the Blue Economy. The review of B.Sc. (Coastal and Marine Resources Management) programme was carried out in order ensure that the courses are in line with current demands of the job market and the emerging global trends in environmental in coastal and marine ecosystems. The graduates of B.Sc. (Coastal and Marine Resources Management) will be equipped with current information to enhance their employability and tackle issues currently affecting the sustainable exploitation of our coastal and marine resources.

Mode of delivery of the programme
The programme is delivered through both face-to-face through a variety of methods including lectures, tutorials, discussions, student presentations, laboratory and field-based practical lessons, individual fourth year research projects, demonstrations, class assignments, continuous assessment tests, final examinations.
Admission requirements for the programme
A student wishing to pursue a BSc. degree in the Coastal and Marine Resources Management must satisfy the minimum university entry requirements and School of Pure and Applied Sciences regulations. The minimum requirement for admission is Grade C+ at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) or equivalent. A student must have passed Mathematics in the K.C.S.E. at a minimum grade of C. In addition students must have passed Biology or Biological Sciences in K.C.S.E. with a minimum of grade C+ and any other two subjects from the following alternatives at the minimum grades shown:
Alternative A: Chemistry C; Physics C; Geography C+.
Alternative B: Physical Sciences C+; Geography C+.
Or: (i) Have a minimum of 2 principal passes in science subjects in Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE or A-level), one of which must be Biology
Or: (ii) Have a diploma in relevant subjects with at least a credit pass from an institution recognized by the University Senate, Or: (iii) Have a Higher National Diploma with a credit pass in a Biology related subject from an Institution recognized by the University senate,
Or: (iv) Have any other qualifications accepted by the University senate as equivalent to (i) to (iv).
