Introduction

Students enrolling to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology will be equipped with knowledge and skills for solving problems by application of their biotechnological know-how.Ìý They will additionally be equipped with knowledge to improve and develop new scientific tools and products using biotechnology for specific human and agricultural needs.Ìý The programme involves theory and practicals spanning from basic to emerging trend technologies.

 

Rationale

Biotechnology fosters to develop an investigative, analytical and skills through field, laboratory and research investigations of living systems via critical innovation, evaluation of the development, ethical applications and influences of contemporary knowledge in a range of contexts. The knowledge and skills acquired find relevance in solving current and emerging problems in energy, food, climate change, agriculture and health among others.

Objectives

To equip learners with biotechnological know-how and hands on experience on use of living systems for production of biomolecules for human consumptions, environmental conservation with sustainability aspect underlined.

By the end of the programme, the graduate shall be able to effectively;

  • Apply biotechnological know-how in DNA recombination in improvement of plants, animals, humans and development of human and animal therapeutics.
  • Practice professional ethics regarding gene manipulation in animals and other organisms
  • Perform Gene-bank searches, Sequence analysis: translation, identification of protein motifs topological signals and protein structure prediction for specific gene manipulation protocols

 

Mode of Delivery and programme structure

The programme shall be offered on a Full Time basis. Teaching will be physical (Face to face). The programmeÌý will be offered within a period of four academic years, each year comprising two semesters.Ìý Semester one runs between September to December and Semester is from January to May. To graduate with a B.Sc in Biotechnology, the candidate shall have satisfactorily completedÌý49ÌýDepartmental unitsÌý in addition to theÌýthreeÌý(3)University common units. All units offered during the first semester within the four years and during the second semester of year one and two will be core while those offered during second semester of third and fourth year will be elective where one will register for six units for semester.ÌýÌýÌý These Shall account for a minimum total of 1820 hours.

 

Curriculum Highlights

The programme offers units like structures of biomolecules, genetics, molecular biology, cell and tissue culture, bioinformatics technology, gene technology among others.ÌýIn third year, the students must participate in industrial attachment for three (3) months. In the fourth year, a student can opt to carry out a research project in a related area which is equated to two units.

 

Admissions Requirements

The candidate must meet the ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ and the School of Pure and Applied Sciences requirements. To be admitted to Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry, the candidate shall be required to have passed KCSE at a mean grade of C+ and obtained at least for those in alternative A: Biology B- (B minus), Chemistry B- (B minus), physics C+ (C plus) and Mathematics C+ (C plus).Ìý For those from Alternative B:Ìý Biological Science B, Physical Science

B and Mathematics C+;Ìý OR Diploma certificate in a relevant discipline, with KCSE mean grade of C (plain) or KCE Division III and C+ in each of the mandatory subjects plus at least two years relevant working experience.
