INTRODUCTION

Religious Studies is one of the subjects offered under the Bachelor of Education Arts Social Science degree programme in the School of Education &Life Long Learning but housed in the school of law arts and Social sciences.

Program Objectives

SLO 1 Explore the beliefs, doctrines, teachings and practices of Christianity and Islam

respectively.

SLO 2 Demonstrate knowledge in major contemporary issues and trends in Christianity and

Islam respectively.

SLO 3: Analyze religion as a phenomenon for interpreting and understanding contemporary

issues in society.

SLO 4: Demonstrate the contribution of religion in socioeconomic and political development of

society.

SLO 5: Implement requisite skills to conduct research within Christianity and Islam respectively.

SLO 6: Apply skills, values and knowledge acquired through the study of religion for a career in

JUSTIFICATION/RATIONALE

This programme, taking cognizance of the fast changing needs of the 21st century helps to enhance mutual understanding of cultures and religions through teaching, research and social interaction. The CRE and IRE contents taught build the learners moral understanding of religion and culture from a global academic perspective. Additionally, it prepares the learners to meet the CRE and IRE teaching content need for students in secondary schools in Kenya.

Admission Requirements

a) A learner wishing to study Bachelor of Arts must satisfy the minimum university requirements of a mean grade of C+ (plus) in KCSE or its equivalent
b) In addition, applicants must meet minimum requirements for each of the subject specialization option set by the department/school as shown below;

A minimum mean grade of C+ at KCSE level or its equivalent, with at least a C+ in Christian Religious Education or Islamic Religious Education OR A Principal pass at A Level or its equivalent in Christian Religious Education or Islamic Religious Education OR Mean grade of C (plain) at KCSE or its equivalent plus a Diploma in Religious Studies or any other relevant area of at least credit pass from a recognized Institution OR Mean grade C- (minus) at KCSE or its equivalent with a Certificate and Diploma in Religious studies, Theology or any other relevant area

Research Activities
Postgraduate students are engaged in various research activities which include: Human rights, corruption, gender philosophy, biomedical ethics, Logic and law, management ethics, methodology of science, and conflict management.

Additionally This programme is suitably designed to combine with other subjects in the programme to produce a Bachelor of Arts graduate with relevant skills, knowledge and values in humanities responsive to social, economic and political needs of the twenty first century.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

The main objective is to develop a Bachelor of Arts programme capable of producing graduates with the skills and competencies required by the fast changing life in the twenty first century. In particular, the program aims at producing people who are broad and open-minded, with critical and creative skills, high moral and ethical values and responsive to societal needs.

JUSTIFICATION/RATIONALE

This programme, taking cognizance of the fast changing needs of the 21st century helps to enhance key competencies, skills and values such as: critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and innovation and self-efficacy. The product of this programme will be a self-reliant, autonomous thinker with critical and creative insights on diverse issues, be they political, social and economic at both national and international levels.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To qualify for admission to take philosophy under the Bachelor of Arts programme the applicant should have attained at least:

A minimum mean grade of C+ at KCSE level or its equivalent

OR

At least two (2) Principals and one (1) Subsidiary in any subjects (A-level) or its equivalent.

OR
Mean grade C (plain) at KCSE or its equivalent with a Diploma in Philosophy

 

OR

Mean grade C- (minus) at KCSE or its equivalent with a Certificate in philosophy and subsequent Diploma in Philosophy

 

MODE AND STRUCTURE OF DELIVERY

Mode of delivery of the Programme

The mode of delivery of this programme will be blended learning, which involves both face-to face interactions and online teaching and activities on Kusoma online teaching platform. The programmme is rendered on Regular (FULL TIME) , continuing education program (CEP) and Digital & Open learning modes of study.
