ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The criteria for admission in the department of Sociology are those that apply for 吃瓜头条 and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Students can take a major in Sociology or a minor in Sociology in the 3:3:2:2 degree patterns
+. This means that students take courses in three departments in level 100 units and level 200 units and courses in two departments at level 300 and 400.

ASC 100:INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY
Concepts of Sociology as an academic discipline and a social science, branches of Sociology, its relation to other sciences, leading founding thinkers of Sociology.聽 Comte, Spencer, Durkheim, Weber, Parsons, Saint di-Simon, Marx and Cooley.聽 Social processes and the relation between man and society, nature and functions of various social institutions.
ASC 101:INTRODUCTION TO ANTHROPOLOGY
Introduction to various branches of anthropology such as archeology, physical and biological aspects of anthropology, linguistic, economic, ethnological and cultural anthropology, anthropological research methods, founding fathers of anthropology.聽 Malinowski, Levi-Strauss, favor and Margaret Mead.聽 Culture, cultural change, use of symbols and communication.聽 Social structure in traditional and modern societies, traditional and modern social institutions.聽 Social change in Africa including urbanization and related alterations.
ASC 102:SOCIAL STATISTICS I
Background and definition of statistics, types of statistics.聽 Function and limitations of statistics, descriptive data, scales of measurements, measures of central tendency and dispersion, data analysis procedure and presentation, elements of probability.

ASC 200:SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY 1
Major social thinkers and theorists of the past, different schools of thought and various perspectives as they have evolved in the field of Sociology: evolution, functionalism, conflict, social exchange and interaction.聽 Contemporary social theorists.
ASC 201:SOCIAL CHANGE
Major concepts and indicators of social change, major sources of social and cultural chance with particular emphasis on Africa. Micro and macro analysis of the impact of technological change on education, population growth, economy, mass communication and social structure, selected theories and models of social change such as conflict theory, evolutionary theory, modernization and diffusion theories.

ASC 300:RURAL SOCIOLOGY
Emergence and growth of rural sociology as a discipline. Theoretical perspectives and classical approaches to studies of rural communities. Nature and types of rural societies: community leadership, pastoralism, peasantry, migration and land tenure systems. Rural development, case studies of rural development and planning foe example Harambee, Ujamaa, common man鈥檚 charter and district focus strategy. Aspects of rural labor.
ASC 301:SOCIOLOGY OF MARRIAGE & FAMILY

Concepts and theories, theoretical perspective on health and illness, organization of medical practice, health institutions, the profession of medicine, Doctor patient relationships, types of medical systems in various cultures and societies, the sick and delivery of health care, identification, distribution and treatment of illnesses and diseases, social epidemiology; health attitudes and behavior, social attitudes and behavior, social attitudes to illnesses, socialization of health practitioners and training, provision of health facilities in urban and rural areas. ASC 410:THE SOCIOLOGY OF KNOWLEDGE
Concepts of the social roots of knowledge. Theories of knowledge: science as knowledge, ideology, intellectuals and milieu. Social construction of reality. Selected theories of knowledge: Marx Durkheim, Mannheim, Berger and Luckman.
ASC 411:SOCIAL STATISTICS II
