A key highlight of the occasion was the presentation of more than 800 carefully selected library books (volumes) to . The visiting delegation was led by Dr Be谩ta D谩vid, Dean of the Institute of Mental Health at Semmelweis University, who outlined potential areas of cooperation between the two institutions, including opportunities available through the European Journal of Mental Health.

Dr D谩vid described the journal as an international, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed and open-access scientific publication established in 2006 by the Institute of Mental Health at Semmelweis University. The journal publishes research in the medical, social and behavioural sciences, with particular emphasis on mental health, personal and relational well-being, and quality of life.

She further noted that the journal does not charge publication fees, providing researchers with an accessible platform through which to share high-quality and impactful scientific work with an international audience.

Discussions centred on developing joint research projects, strengthening academic and staff exchanges, supporting collaborative publications and establishing capacity-building programmes. The meeting also explored opportunities for 吃瓜头条 scholars to publish in the European Journal of Mental Health, serve as peer reviewers and participate in international interdisciplinary research networks.

Among those present were Dr Francisca Ong鈥檈cha from the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health, Mr Zachary Njue from the Department of Student Affairs, Mr Josphat Gishure from the Research Office, Dr Samuel Mwangi and Dr Francis Paul from the Department of Sociology, Dr Paul Sung from the Department of Management Science, Prof. Kairu, an ETC Consultant, and Dr 脕kos Pethes, a medical doctor.

The global displacement crisis has reached an unprecedented scale, with over 120 million people worldwide forced to flee their homes. Here in Kenya, we host two of the world鈥檚 largest refugee zones, the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Turkana County and the Dadaab Refugee Complex in Garissa Count, which together shelter more than 200,000 refugees and asylum seekers. For these individuals, and for internally displaced persons (IDPs) across borders in regions like Bosaso and Mogadishu, Somalia, displacement often means a devastating halt to education.听

The systemic disruptions to schooling, an almost complete absence of structured pathways to higher education, linguistic barriers, and severe digital exclusion create a cycle that locks displaced communities out of the modern economic landscape.听

To dismantle these barriers, the Inclusive and Innovative Digital Education for Migrant Communities (IIDEMIC) project was born. Led by 吃瓜头条 and funded by the European Commission and the EACEA under the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) Programme, this multinational consortium spans six institutions across Kenya, Somalia, Poland, and Turkey. Our core mission is simple yet transformative: to leverage technology to deliver inclusive, skills-oriented education that restores dignity, fosters self-reliance, and builds social cohesion.听

Real Impact in Challenging Environments

On June 18, 2026, the IIDEMIC Project Team gathered with university leadership and faculty at 吃瓜头条 for a dissemination seminar to share our preliminary findings and operational milestones. What the data reveals is a testament to what is possible when inclusive design is collaboratively embraced.听

Despite operating in resource-constrained environments, the project has successfully reached:

• 900 total enrolled participants across all our implementation sites.听
• 800+ learners actively engaged in ongoing courses.听
• An incredible 54% course completion rate (for most of the 10 courses offered) on our custom Moodle Learning Management System (LMS)鈥攁 remarkable feat given the infrastructural hurdles.听

We have fully developed and deployed a mobile-friendly, low-bandwidth optimized lifelong learning platform integrated with assistive technologies. Concurrently, our team has rolled out a comprehensive teacher training curriculum (of 10 21st Century courses), fundamentally shifting educator confidence in utilizing digital tools to support participants with diverse needs.听

What We Have Learned: Key Insights from the Field

Our implementation journey across seven comprehensive work packages has yielded critical insights into how digital interventions must adapt to survive in displacement settings:听

1. Mobile-First and Self-Paced Design is Non-Negotiable

Displaced learners deal with highly unpredictable schedules, constant mobility, and limited device sharing. Our findings show a resounding preference for mobile learning and short, skills-oriented courses. Designing for mobile environments from day one is what keeps these learners connected.听

2. Localized Content Drives Success

Standardized, monocultural education fails in diverse settings. When content is co-designed with multi-country partners to reflect their unique cultures, lived realities, and languages, learner engagement and course completion rates rise.听

The Road Ahead: Confronting Challenges and Scaling Up

While our initial successes are encouraging, our data has highlighted critical areas that demand immediate, intentional advocacy and action.

A stark gender disparity currently exists within our data, with female participation standing at only 12%. Moving forward, the IIDEMIC team is prioritizing targeted female outreach, working directly with refugee camp women鈥檚 organizations, and restructuring course schedules. Furthermore, persistent structural challenges like language barriers and local connectivity deficits mean we must continue refining offline-capable solutions.听

To ensure the seeds sown by the IIDEMIC project grow into permanent structures, we are calling upon our academic and policy stakeholders to support our next strategic steps:

• Institutional Sustainability: Collaborating with ICT directorates to secure long-term, post-project hosting for the lifelong learning platform.听
• Academic Institutionalization: Establishing accredited short certificate programmes through the School of Education and Lifelong Learning (SOE&LLL) and embedding service-learning into teaching practices.听
• Policy Mainstreaming: Engaging the Ministry of Education and national policy bodies to scale this inclusive digital model at a national level.听

Co-designing and assessing the socio-economic impacts of climate-smart Vegetable-Integrated Push鈥揚ull Technology on the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Kenya.

The research project

The PhD project is part of a five-year research project (April 2026 鈥� March 2031) entitled 鈥楨cology-based Climate Resilient Innovation for Sustainable Vegetable Intensification in Eastern Africa (EcoVeg4Africa)鈥�. The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs funds the research project through the Danida Fellowship Centre. You can read more about the project here:

The goal of the research project is to enable smallholder farmers in Kenya and Ethiopia, particularly women and youth, to use fewer or no hazardous pesticides in vegetable production, improve plant nutrition, water status, and soil health, reduce crop losses caused by harmful pests, and increase production of safer, more nutritious, and higher-value food crops. The basis for this work is a nature-based, climate-smart vegetable production system known as Vegetable-Integrated Push鈥揚ull Technology (VIPPT). This system will be developed and tested in the project, and VIPPT pairs of local and high-value crops will be identified. The idea of the VIPPT system is that some companion plants repel pests within the crop (鈥減ush鈥�), while border plants attract pests away from the crop (鈥減ull鈥�).听

The PhD project

The PhD project focuses on identifying drivers and barriers for adoption of the VIPPT system, drawing on input from farmers, extension officers, and local authorities across contrasting Agro-ecological zones using an agroecology living lab approach. The PhD project also focuses on a socio-economic assessment of the VIPPT system following the introduction of the most promising crop鈥揷ompanion pairs grown under field conditions.听

The core elements of the project:

• Mapping vegetable production systems and identifying the potentials and challenges of vegetable production by smallholders in Kenya using a living lab approach
• Assess farmers鈥� preferences for vegetable companion crops suitable for their farming system听
• Study smallholder farmers and subsistence markets for vegetable products to understand how farmers can benefit economically from increased vegetable production using the VIPPT-adapted system听
• Evaluate economic feasibility, including market value and profitability of vegetable crops to ensure sustainability and adoption, particularly by women and youth.听
• Designing, researching, collecting and analysing data, drafting scientific papers for publications in peer-reviewed journals, and contributing to writing policy briefs and practical guidelines.
• Dissemination of research findings to local, regional, and national stakeholders through conferences and workshops.听

Eligibility criteria

• A relevant MSc degree in social sciences, preferably agricultural economics, agribusiness management, or a closely related field from an institution recognised by the 吃瓜头条 Senate.
• Preference will be given to applicants who completed their master鈥檚 degree within the last six years.
• The master’s degree must be obtained through a program that includes coursework, examinations, and thesis work with a minimum average grade of B (or its equivalent).
• The MSc work must demonstrate the capacity to conceptualise, design, and undertake independent research through a master鈥檚 thesis, scholarly publications, technical reports, or other equivalent research outputs.
• Evidence of research dissemination through publications, conference presentations, technical reports, or equivalent scholarly outputs will be an added advantage.听
• Having a strong interest in engaging with farmers and in field-based research.
• Knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative research methods, including survey research and interviewing.
• Strong knowledge of analytical software (STATA, SPSS, and R).听
• Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in an international, multidisciplinary team.

Additional requirements

• The applicant must already have registered for a PhD at 吃瓜头条.
• The applicant must be able to work full-time on the PhD project for 48 months. Research funds, tuition, and a stipend are included.听
• The PhD student must spend part of the research time at ICIPE in Nairobi, conduct frequent fieldwork in Kenya, and undertake a short-term research stay at Aarhus University, Denmark.
