Empowering educators through practical experience, continuous development and performance evaluation | Director: Dr. Caroline Mutwiri
The Centre for Teacher Professional Development and Excellence (TPDEX) shapes the future of education by empowering educators through practical experience, continuous development and performance evaluation. Operating since 2011, the centre runs programmes across Kenya and East Africa, supported by a network of 2,858 trained teacher-mentors and 1,114 institutional heads.
Headed by Director Dr. Caroline Mutwiri, TPDEX is organised around three sections: Teaching Practicum and Mentorship, Teacher Professional Development, and Teaching Excellence and Evaluation. The centre has implemented online Competency-Based Assessment rubrics for teaching practice evaluation and maintains a comprehensive database of past practicum students for talent identification. It is located at the Directorate Complex, ground floor wing C, KU Main Campus.

A database of past practicum students supporting talent identification and recruitment.
The Teaching Practicum turns five semesters of theory into real classroom experience. It spans a full school term, usually the second term, in partner schools across Kenya. Every student teacher is supported by trained teacher-mentors and institutional heads, and assessed with the University’s online Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) tool.
For eligible second-year Bachelor of Education students. Student teachers shadow cooperating teachers in a placement school and keep a daily log book of their activities (May–August session).
For third- and fourth-year B.Ed. students who have completed ECT 213, and for Certificate, Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma in Education students (May–July session).
Every ECT 213 student teacher keeps the official Student Log Book, issued by the Department of Educational Communication & Technology, School of Education & Lifelong Learning. It records the activities you take part in and the new skills you learn, so you and your supervisors can track your progress.
Record each day’s work clearly, with sketches and diagrams where applicable, on the weekly progress chart.
Summarise the week’s work, theory and practice, and present the log book to your cooperating teacher(s) for comments every week.
The visiting University faculty member checks the log book and records comments. They can cancel a placement if proper training is not being offered.
Write a summary report covering activities, challenges and new skills. Submit it with the log book and cooperating teachers’ observation forms through your University Zone Coordinator.
³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ lecturers who wish to supervise and assess student teachers apply using the Teaching Practice Assessment Application Form (TPA 2).
Teaching Practice placements are organised into 30 zones across the country, each with its own list of partner schools. Download the lists to see the schools in each zone.

Teacher quality is the most important school-related factor in student achievement, and continuing professional development is a career-long obligation for every practising teacher. ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ is a Teachers Service Commission (TSC) accredited service provider for the Teacher Professional Development programme, and invites registered teachers from primary, secondary and tertiary institutions to enrol.
Through the Student–Lecturer Evaluation (SLE) process, TPDEX evaluates teaching methods, assessments and classroom experience to keep standards high and help lecturers adapt to changing academic and market demands. TPDEX also runs mandatory pedagogy skills training for all KU teaching staff before they begin teaching. Students complete course evaluations each semester on the survey portal.
